Blandford School Gets Solar Power

lBlandford Forum School goes green.

Thanks to construction company Morgan Sindall the new £6 million extension at The Blandford School hits a new green milestone, as two hundred photovoltaic panels (solar power panels to the likes of you and me) have been fitted to the South-West elevation (that’s the side that gets most of the sun during the day) of the building in a bid to make the site greener and reduce the school’s electricity costs, saving them money in the long term.

The school, in Milldown Road, Blandford Forum, who have had a long successful relationship with the building firm, will hope to see the building completed in October, where the panels will be used to supplement the electrical supply of the building helping to reduce coast and improve efficiency.

Listen up, here comes the science bit.

The panels themselves work by absorbing solar energy turning it into electricity, and will hopefully generate roughly 6,250 kW of energy per year. How much is that exactly? 6,250 kW is enough to run the lights and power for a five bedroom house for a year, so that’s a saving of about £60 a month, or just under £750 a year. Not bad at all.

So when will other schools in the area follow The Blandford School’s lead?
