Blandford Fly Causes Havoc In Cities

The
blood sucking Blandford fly, nicknamed the ‘superfly’, is said to have invaded UK cities in large
numbers, with recent reports of a surge in bites and sightings in built up
areas.
Named
after its' home at Blandford Forum, the Blandford fly has a bite which can cause
an infection requiring hospital treatment. This is explained fully in an ominous
article by the Metro: “Surge in Blandford fly bites that send victims to
hospital in agony” (Read it and you’ll understand why Londoners are now scared
witless).
So
why has this dangerous insect travelled up to hundreds of miles to attack
unsuspecting city folk? Experts say that the warmer weather has caused the
migration of the tiny beasts, as well as the increase in garden ponds and water
features that city residents have been installing in their gardens.
Some
experts believe that the increase in bites is a result of changes in human
behaviour as much as changes in insect behaviour. The warm weather encourages
insects such as horseflies, mosquitoes, midges and the ‘superfly’ to become
more active in the evenings but equally encourages people to stay outside for
longer.
Singer
from The Saturdays, Mollie King, recently had to pull out of a television
appearance after being bitten by one of the ‘superflies’ with complaints
of a swollen ankle. The 23-year-old star had to be treated for the bite in
hospital.
Have
you ever been bitten by a Blandford fly? Do you think the increased threat is something
to be concerned about or are these city folk getting worked up over nothing?

You know it if you've been stung by one of these. I always keep Piriton in my cupboard just in case.

ReportI hate the Blanford Fly (the wee beastie, not the ale). I got stung on the arm a couple of years ago and when it swelled to twice its size I had to be rushed to hospital. Very painful.
